WASHINGTON (AP) —The U. S. Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning that the drug Viagra could increase the risk of strokes, heart attacks and other strokes in men over the age of 50.
The agency said this could be because men who took the drug did not have lower blood pressure compared with those who did.
Viagra, the drug’s name, has been on the market in more than a dozen countries since 1998, and in Europe since 1999.
The FDA has warned that men who take Viagra or a similar drug, such as Lipitor, could have heart attacks or strokes.
Viagra also could increase the risk for heart attacks, strokes and other heart-related illnesses, the agency said.
This is the latest FDA move to increase the number of drugs that have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, which was also alerted to the dangers of taking too many pills.
The FDA has warned doctors and pharmacists that taking Viagra could increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes in some patients.
In 2011, the drug maker Pfizer warned that it could cause heart attacks or strokes in some men.
The agency also warned that patients with heart disease who took a low dose of the drug could also have a heart attack or stroke.
